At a recent meeting at the Negril Craft Market with the chairman and representatives of the Negril/Green Island Area Local Planning Authority, and Member of Parliament for Western Westmoreland Dr Wykeham McNeill, Dr. Horace Chang – Minister of Water & Housing – announced that approximately 800 housing lots are to be developed in the White Hall Phase 2 Housing Scheme, which is coming soon to Negril, Westmoreland. He said that the project will cost approximately $300 million, and will be for low-income earners.
The meeting and announcement came following a recent tour of various areas in negril – regarded as ‘squatter settlements’ – and Dr. Chang said that regularisation (proper housing settlements) had become urgent, in order to preserve Negril as a prime tourist area. He noted that adequate land space was available, but that the necessary steps would have to be taken to organise it properly in order to support and enhance the town.
