Housing Agency of Jamaica To Build 8000 Houses In in St. Catherine, Westmoreland, St. James and St. Ann

According to Joseph Shoucair, managing director of the Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ), they have accelerated their drive to increase the number of available houses in Jamaica, with some 8,676 housing solutions slated for completion within the next three years. The major developments will be in St. Catherine, Westmoreland, St. James and St. Ann, but the big question is whether or not the average person will still be able to afford these units (as per the Clovis cartoon below).

Some current HAJ developments:
Whitehall, Westmoreland – 376 serviced lots and 200 studio units
Green Pond, St. James – 45 lots and 290 one- and two-bedroom units
Retirement, St. James – 128 lots and 238 studios
Grange Pen, St. James – 400 lots, 500 studios and one- and two-bedroom units.

New Portmore Housing Development Coming Soon – Westmeade Willows (Westmeade Phase Two)

Ground was broken yesterday, for a new housing development in Portmore, St. Catherine called Westmeade Willows (Westmeade Phase Two). The 125 detached two-bedroom units will be built on 12.2 hectares of land across from the communities of Garveymeade and Southborough. It is expected that the selling price of the units will be in the region of J$8 million each.

Construction of Westmeade Willows should start within the next two weeks, and is expected to last 18 months. The lead contractor is Y.P. Seaton, with The Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) being the catalyst.

Ground Broken For Portmore Villas Phase 2B

The Housing Agency of Jamaica (HAJ) broke ground recently, for the construction of its third housing development of the year in Portmore Villas Phase 2B, St. Catherine. Approximately 130 one-bedroom units (described as starter homes) are to be built there.

‘Starter homes’ are best described as units that have basic amenities, and that allow home owners to expand when/if their finances allow. The units will reportedly be sold at a median price of J$1.2 million.

According to the HAJ, this project is just one part of their aim to provide some 10,000 housing solutions for potential homeowners by the year 2013. In addition to this Portmore Villas development, it has already broken ground on 56 two-bedroom units at Stadium Gardens, St. Andrew, another 49 units and eight lots in Luana, St. Elizabeth.
